Caloric density is the amount of calories in a given weight or volume of food. A food with high calorie density, like olive oil, has over 4,000 calories per pound. A food with low calorie density, like cucumbers, has 54 calories per pound. You can mix a higher-density food with a lower-density food to engage in caloric dilution, thus lowering the overall caloric density of the meal.
